New safety barriers are being installed on the Hume Highway at Kyeamba Gap between Tarcutta and Holbrook to improve safety.
The state government will spend $2 million to install the safety barriers along a 2.5-kilometre stretch of the highway and to widen some sections as part of the Saving Lives on Country Roads initiative.
Dr Joe McGirr said the safety upgrades will reduce the likelihood and severity of run-off road crashes along this narrow, winding section of the highway.
“In the five years of validated crash data to 30 June 2020, there were 11 crashes on this stretch of road, three of which resulted in moderate to serious injuries,” Dr McGirr said.
“Most were run-off road crashes that occurred on curves. Flexible safety barriers can reduce the severity of high-risk crashes by up to 95 per cent.”
In October 2021, the highway was closed by a two-truck collision that left one man trapped in his vehicle south of Kyeamba Gap.
In January this year, emergency services responded to reports that a vehicle had caught on fire, and the road between Little Billabong and Kyeamba Gap was briefly closed.
Dr McGirr said that while the upgrades were underway, work crews would also permanently close the crossover between the northbound and southbound Kyeamba Gap rest areas.
“This work is in preparation for future upgrades in the area and will improve safety movements for all motorists along this section of the highway.”
The work will cause some disruption and be carried out on weekdays from 7 am to 4 pm from Tuesday 10 September to Friday 18 October, weather permitting.
