Wagga Wagga City Council has announced it will conduct roadworks for almost two weeks on Docker and Bourke streets ahead of the trial closure of the Edmondson Street Bridge.

Council has decided to conduct the roadworks to best prepare the roads for the large number of motorists expected to use them as part of detours during the bridge closure expected to take place in late November.

The works are expected to be delivered in two stages, with stage one works running from 6 am to 6 pm every day from Monday 20 October to Friday 24 October.

Stage one is set to involve kerb and gutter replacement on Docker Street between Chaston and Edward streets, and a section of Dwyer Avenue. Traffic will be reduced to one lane in either direction, with a speed restriction of 40 km/h.

Stage two works will see more sporadic work times beginning on Sunday, 26 October.

The works will involve road rehabilitation on Bourke and Docker streets between Athol Street and Meurant Avenue. Roads will be closed to through traffic while workers are on-site.

The dates and times for the works are:

Sunday 26 October, 6 pm – 6 am (night works); Monday 27 October, 2 – 9 pm; Tuesday 28 October, 6 pm – 6 am (night works); Wednesday 29 October, 6 pm – 6 am (night works); Thursday 30 October, 6 pm – 6 am (night works); Friday 31 October, 6 pm – 6 am (night works).

Director of Infrastructure Services Henry Pavitt said the stretch of Bourke and Docker streets and the intersections within the work zone would be closed to through traffic at various times during the stage two works.

“The majority of this will be carried out as night works, between 6 pm and 6 am, with the exception of Monday 27 October, which will be from 2 pm to 9 pm to align with the time provided by the ARTC when no trains will be passing through, so work can be completed safely,” Mr Pavitt said.

“We are encouraging road users to plan ahead and avoid the area during the scheduled rehabilitation times.

“We know Docker Street is a key thoroughfare for north- and south-bound traffic and understand the closure on the Monday (27 October) will cause significant disruptions for the community during after-school pick-up times and after work.

“However, it is important we get this rehabilitation work completed as soon as possible, so it’s ready to carry the increase in traffic that is expected to use Docker Street when the Edmondson Street Bridge is closed.”
