A mother has appealed for financial assistance to help with mounting bills while her disabled son recovers from a freak traffic accident.

On Wednesday 3 February, Isaak Halls, 21, was riding his motorbike when he collided with a car that pulled out in front of him on Young Street in Albury.

“He flew a long way from the site where he was hit and is lucky to be alive,” mum Alicia O’Reilly said.

“He was rushed to hospital. Two teams had to work on his legs, they didn’t have capacity in Albury, so he was transferred to Royal Melbourne Hospital.”

Izaak broke 16 bones. He’s started to recover this week but there is a long way to go.

“He doesn’t have any spinal damage but there are more tests that need to be done to see if he has brain damage,” Alicia said.

“He’s talking a little bit, but it’s just not Izaak. He’s just different, the way he’s talking.

“Izaak is normally an outgoing guy that just talks to everyone – he’ll walk up to anyone on the street and have a chat.”

Izaak grew up in Leeton but now lives in Albury. He has an intellectual disability and is supported through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

“The NDIS won’t pay for his carer to be here when he’s in hospital,” Alicia said.

“I’ve come to Melbourne to be by his side and care for him.”

Alicia is employed as a cleaner in Albury, but is a casual, so doesn’t get paid when she’s not working.

She’s had to travel to Melbourne and stay there at her own expense.

“I tried to go through the hospital recommendations to find a cheap hotel, but they’re even more expensive than the ones you can find,” she said.

Alicia has therefore set up a gofundme page to help her.

“Any support people could provide would be most appreciated,” she said.

“There are a lot of bills and it’s exhausting being in hospital all day. We’re really hoping for some good news about Izaak.”
