Hanwood-based McWilliam’s Wines has been announced as an official supplier to the 2024 Australian team at the Paralympics, which commences next Thursday (29 August) in Paris, France.

“We are thrilled to be supporting Paralympics Australia. The work they do for improving accessibility for all Australians with a disability, and for delivering world-class leadership in para-sport is very admirable and I, like many Australians, can’t wait to see what our athletes will achieve on the world stage,” said Scott McWilliam, Global Brand Ambassador for McWilliam’s Wines.

“We are certain they will be raising many glasses in celebration of our athletes’ achievements, and we are so proud it will be McWilliam’s Wines there with them.”

The McWilliam family were pioneers of winemaking in Australia. In 1877, Irish immigrant Samuel McWilliam planted his first vines on the outskirts of Corowa. His son John James established the Hanwood McWilliam estate in 1917, the first winery in the Griffith region.

“McWilliam’s Wines has been a proudly Australian owned and made wine brand for 147 years so to be the official wine of the Australian Paralympic team is a very proud moment for everyone in our organisation,” Carrah Lymer, McWilliam’s Wines brand manager said.

“In 1982, McWilliam Wines was a major sponsor and official supplier of the Brisbane Commonwealth Games so it is nice to see McWilliam’s Wines involved in such an iconic sporting moment for Australia once again.”

Once the athletes return from Paris, McWilliam’s Wines will be enjoyed at their black-tie QLD Premier’s Welcome Home Dinner in Brisbane.

The winery will continue to support Paralympics Australia with wine for their engagements and fundraising initiatives for the remainder of 2024.

McWilliam’s Wines is perhaps best known for the Big Wine Barrel, a giant scaled replica of a wine barrel built into the Hanwood cellar door in 1973. It was closed for several years but reopened in August 2023, two years after the Griffith-based Calabria family took ownership of the brand and its vineyard.

Wine tastings at the Big Wine Barrell can be booked on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays through the McWilliam Wines website.

Paralympics Australia CEO Cameron Murray said he was delighted to welcome McWilliam’s Wines to the Australian Paralympic movement.

“McWilliam’s is a prestigious brand with a rich history in Australia and we’re excited about the potential of our new partnership. I look forward to raising a glass with McWilliam’s Wines to celebrate responsibly in honour of the remarkable achievements of our Australian team,” he said.
