Wikipedia says: David Sean “Gleeso” Gleeson (born 3 June, 1968) is the lead singer of the Australian hard-rock group The Screaming Jets.
He was born in Newcastle, NSW, and currently resides in Adelaide Hills, South Australia.
We say: Champion bloke and deadset Aussie rock icon! He’s also the frontman for the legendary Australian band The Angels and in our “Top 50 Aussies to have a beer with”.
We asked him 10 questions about our part of the world.
Dave, do you have a connection to the Region? What and when was your last visit?
The Jets first played Wagga 30 years ago at a place called Coco Cabana, if memory serves. Some wild nights there!
As recently as last year we blew the roof off the Que Bar (Tilly’s). Awesome venue indeed.
Favourite part of the Region?
I have to say, The Angels played the Deni Ute Muster recently and it was superb. So Deniliquin now holds a special place in my heart. Put the muster on your list!
What was your best food experience?
Mostly we eat at truck stops, get room service or the ubiquitous Macca’s. We have discovered a beautiful little cafe in Wagga called Le Brooks, owned by dear friends Kaz and Glenn. Best sangas, pies and coffee in town. Fresh n delicious.
*Author’s note – I own Le Brooks and there was no cash for comment. Dave and the band all paid for their food. But thank you for the plug!!
What’s a “must do” when in the Region?
If you miss the chance to spend a hot day at Wagga Beach, you really have missed out. When I first saw the sign saying “ Wagga Beach”, I thought it was a gag.
On the banks of the mighty Murrumbidgee, it is a great spot for everyone. Watch out for the sharks!
Drive or fly?
We drive, drive, drive the rock’n’roll highway and that highway has no end.
What are your three go-to songs on the road trip to the Region?
The Way. Fastball
Born to Be Wild. Steppenwolf
It’s a Long Way to the Top. AC/DC
Name one person who you would not want in the passenger seat for the drive.
Me. I’m a pain in the bum. Flicking between radio stations, pontificating, snoring, swearing. Nightmare!
Name anyone, dead or alive, who you would want in the passenger seat for the drive.
Bon Scott, to hear his stories and his cheeky laugh.
Do you bring your own pillows?
I travel very light. No headphones, no books, no laptop, no pillow.
Why should someone who hasn’t visited here make the trip?
I reckon the vibrancy of the towns, big and small, the river life, the wineries, landscapes and fair dinkum people of the Riverina are a national treasure.
Everyone should make the journey and once will never be enough.
