Jack Lyons joined the Gundagai Tigers in season 2020 after moving across from Wagga’s South City Bulls.
The try-scoring speedster has been a tremendous addition to the Tigers’ Group 9 premiership-winning side.
As well as helping Gundagai add another piece of silverware to its cabinet in 2022, Jack was one of four Tigers – alongside winger/fullback Latrell Seigwalt, five-eighth Nathan Rose (both now at Wagga Kangaroos) and forward Royce Tout – selected in the Group 9 team of the year.
Where are you from and where did you first start playing footy?
Narrandera, Narrandera Lizards.
Best footy memory?
Winning the Group 9 premiership in 2020 or winning the 2014 Koori Knockout.
Favourite player as a kid and why?
Greg Inglis, because it’s Greg Inglis!
A once-in-a-generation talent, Greg Inglis burst onto the scene as a skinny teenager with the Storm in 2005 and retired from the NRL in 2019 as a legend. Such was his skill, he excelled in multiple positions. The image of Inglis, an Indigenous leader, celebrating scoring the final try in the Rabbitohs’ 2014 grand final win against the Bulldogs with his trademark ”Goanna” crawl is etched into the game’s folklore.
Favourite childhood meal you can remember?
I loved a good Christmas ham.
Favourite ground to play on and why?
Anzac Park, our home ground. Nothing better than playing in front of the Gundagai community.
Why should young kids take up rugby league?
Footy is great socially.
Do you have a celebrity lookalike?
That tennis player Milos Raonic.
What annoys you?
Too many questions! (Glad we don’t ask too many questions here at Region.)
Best advice you’ve ever been given?
Stay on the paint.
On a car trip from the Region to Sydney, who would you NOT want in the passenger seat?
Blake Dunn – he has the air con on in the middle of winter.
Dunn is co-coach of Gundagai this season with Derek Hay. After spending two years coaching Wagga Brothers, he moved to Wagga back in 2010 to coach Brothers. He spent three years in that position before joining Gundagai in 2015.
Any person, dead or alive, who you WOULD want in the passenger seat?
American actor Denzel Washington.
Down to your last $20 – what would you spend it on?
I would definitely spend it on my daughter!
