Graffiti that included the words “white power” and a Nazi swastika that defaced a Wiradjuri Honour Wall in Narrandera has been reported to NSW Police.

Wirajuri local Geoffrey Johnson posted a video of the graffiti at Marie Bashir Park in the centre of town on the Facebook page I Live in Narrandera on Sunday (21 September).

“We’ve got a little Swastika here,” he said.

“I don’t know who’s doing this… someone that’s really small-minded and irresponsible and just a little coward… but I don’t want to catch someone doing it. It’s ridiculous. Not going to put up with it in this town.”

On Monday, he posted another video to inform people that the vandalism had been cleaned by Narrandera Shire Council, whom he thanked.

“Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who expressed their concerns about the graffiti and the council who cleaned it up, thank you. I’m surprised to see something like that. I don’t want my kids to see that stuff or experience that sort of rhetoric… we’ve got a really good park and really good people in this town… we have the power to keep this stuff out of the town,” he said.

Narrandera Shire Council said it referred the incident to NSW Police but declined to make further comment, saying it was a matter for police.

The Wiradjuri Honour Wall was erected in October 2024 as a tribute to the people of the Narrungdera Clan, an Indigenous group who were among the first inhabitants of the Riverina. The name of the town comes from the Clan name. Name plaques displaying the names of original families are being prepared for mounting on the interior panels and commemorations of service to Australia are also on display on the exterior panels.

NSW Police were contacted for comment.
