Narrandera’s $8 million ‘Playground on the Murrumbidgee’ project is now complete with the town’s new Destination and Discovery Hub opening its doors to the public.
The project began in 2018 and aims to showcase what Narrandera has to offer tourists.
The hub is the final step of the plan which has also included upgrades to the Lake Talbot Water Park, the Skywalk and Viewing Platform Project, the pedestrian bridge and the Lake Talbot Tourist Park upgrade.
Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke said the opening of the discovery hub was a significant moment for the Narrandera community and a vital component of the Playground on the Murrumbidgee project.
“This state-of-the-art facility stands as a testament to Narrandera’s commitment to fostering local heritage, promoting tourism, and enhancing community engagement,” she said.
“The infrastructure that has been brought to life as part of the Playground on the Murrumbidgee has truly put Narrandera on the map, and the opening of the hub is a vital component of what has truly been a labour of love for all involved.
“I am so incredibly proud as the local MP to have secured the $8 million investment under the previous Coalition Government for the Playground on the Murrumbidgee, which has supported a range of projects that have truly cemented Narrandera’s reputation as a premier tourist destination.”
Narrandera Shire Council Mayor Neville Kschenka said the new tourism infrastructure in Narrandera had made the town almost impossible to skip for travellers on the Sturt and Newell highways.
“The project has already shown to be working for us,” he said.
“People stay in Narrandera because it is on the junction of two major highways. It’s a good place to stay and then branch out to experience the whole of the region. We’re noticing more people in the street and more from out of town, which I think has been from the back of this project.”
Narrandera has built a strong list of attractions for tourists in recent years, with perhaps none more popular than the Murrumbidgee Valley Nature Reserve, which is the home to more than 200 koalas.
“We have a safe and healthy koala colony which started with about 20 or so koalas in 1973 and now there’s over 200 up and down the river,” Cr Kschenka said.
“It’s definitely one of the major attractions we have and the Playground on the Murrumbidgee has added to that.
“Come stay at our many motels or caravan parks, visit the new Destination and Discovery Hub and see what fabulous things Narrandera and its surrounding areas have to offer.”
Narrandera’s Destination and Discovery Hub is open from 9 am to 4 pm on weekdays, 9 am to 3 pm on Saturdays and 10 am to 2 pm on Sundays.
