A young P-plater has lost his right to drive after NSW Police allegedly detected him travelling at almost 200 km/h on the Hume Highway.
At about 3:32 pm on Easter Monday (6 April), Murray River Highway Patrol saw a black Mercedes-Benz coupe travelling north on the Hume Highway, Holbrook overtaking a long line of traffic, allegedly well in excess of the signposted speed limit.
The vehicle’s speed was checked as the driver allegedly braked at 211 km/h down to 198 km/h.
The car was stopped and the driver, a 19-year-old man from Cragieburn, Victoria produced his provisional licence. He was subjected to drug and alcohol testing, returning negative results.
In relation to his alleged speed, officers reported that the driver stated he was “trying to get to Canberra” before 8 pm.
The driver was issued with a field court attendance notice to attend Holbrook Local Court in May for the offences of driving in a manner and at a speed dangerous to the public and for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45 km/h.
The Mercedes-Benz coupe was confiscated for three months with the driver being responsible for the associated fees. The driver’s privileges were withdrawn pending the outcome at court.
