The original Ettamogah Pub has been advertised for sale, with reports that it could fetch up to $50 million.
The physical property at 561 Burma Rd in Table Top, near Albury, was previously advertised in 2019 for a price guide of around $3 million, but it didn’t sell and remained in the hands of current owner Leigh O’Brien.
This time, the expected price is much higher because the sale will include not just the property but the complete Ettamogah brand, including the intellectual property (IP) and franchising rights, and a rare collection of about 1500 original cartoons.
Real estate agency Savills Hotels is inviting expressions of interest for “one of Australia’s most recognisable hospitality landmarks” until Wednesday, 29 October, if not sold earlier.
Savills says the 4.81-hectare freehold site includes the original pub, a dining barn, vacant shops, a large recreational oval and camping facilities with redevelopment potential.
Marketing agent Drew Mitchell has told media there was “a lot of interest” in the pub in the first 24 hours after it was first advertised.
The Ettamogah Pub was inspired by artist Ken Maynard, who started drawing images of it in 1959. His illustrations were later published in the now-defunct weekly picture magazine the Australasian Post.
The Albury venue was built by businessman Lindsay Cooper and first opened in 1987. According to the pub’s website, the aim was to create a themed family restaurant that would become a tourist icon.
A second Ettamogah Pub then opened at the Aussie World theme park on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast in 1989, followed by a third in Cunderdin in Western Australia in 2001 and a fourth in Kellyville Ridge, Sydney, in 2003.
“More than just a hotel, the Ettamogah Pub is a culturally iconic asset with enduring appeal,” Savills says.
”Its strong brand identity, unique architecture, and emotional connection with generations of Australians position it as a long-term strategic investment with potential for growth, diversification, and legacy value.”
