A 34-year-old man has been charged after allegedly biting a police officer during an arrest in the Riverina.
Police say the incident began at about 1 pm on Wednesday (21 May), when two Toyota SUVs collided on the Sturt Highway near Lower Tarcutta Road at Tarcutta.
No injuries were reported. However, police allege that a short time later, a sedan arrived and took one of the drivers from the scene before details were exchanged and before police were contacted.
At about 2 pm, Riverina Police District officers were patrolling the Adelong area when they spotted the sedan travelling on Tumut Street.
Police signalled for the vehicle to stop on Victoria Hill Road and the driver complied.
Police allege the driver of one of the SUVs – a 34-year-old man – got out from the back seat of the sedan and fled on foot.
Police allege that after a short pursuit the man resisted arrest and bit the wrist of the arresting officer.
Following a subsequent search of the man’s property, police allegedly located methylamphetamine, cocaine and $8550 in cash.
The man was arrested and taken to Tumut Police Station. He was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for minor injuries before being taken to Wagga Wagga Base Hospital for assessment.
He has since been charged with seven offences:
- Two counts of supplying a prohibited drug in more than an indictable and less than a commercial quantity
- Two counts of possessing a prohibited drug
- Hindering or resisting a police officer in the execution of duty
- Assaulting a police officer in the execution of duty causing actual bodily harm
- Knowingly dealing with proceeds of crime.
The man was refused bail and was due to appear before Bail Division Court 5 today (21 May).
