Griffith police have reminded residents to keep houses and cars locked after a spate of incidents in which offenders have obtained car keys by entering unlocked homes and then stolen vehicles or taken cash kept inside them.

In one incident, a victim went to bed at about 10 pm on Wednesday (28 April) at their Griffith address, when offenders allegedly entered via a rear sliding door that was left unlocked. The offenders allegedly took car keys from a kitchen drawer and stole the victim’s two vehicles which were parked in the driveway.

On another occasion, a victim had unknown offenders enter her home through an internal garage window to the house, after the suspects allegedly broke into the garage. The victim had their car keys taken from a hook inside the garage, and the car was taken from the driveway.

Murrumbidgee Police District are again reminding all members of the community to be vigilant when locking their vehicles.

“This is a timely reminder after there has been an increase in incidents reported where the owners have left the vehicle unlocked and/or with the keys left in the vehicle. Homeowners are also leaving either front doors or rear doors unlocked when going to bed for the evening,” District Inspector Glenn Smith said.

“Police often see footage of these property offenders who attempt to open a car door or house door and upon finding it locked, they move on to the next property or vehicle.”

Anyone with any information relating to recent stealing incidents is urged to contact their local police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
