Wagga Wagga City Council (WWCC) has accepted over $1.3 million from Transport for NSW for the construction of a new footpath that will cross Marshalls Creek.

The 728-metre path will create a pedestrian link down Kooringal Road and across the Marshalls Creek Bridge towards Hammond Avenue.

According to a report conducted by WWCC, the current state of the road presents a safety risk for pedestrians who travel to the Exhibition Centre and cross the road at the Marshalls Creek Bridge.

WWCC began designing the path in 2022 before applying for funding through the Get NSW Active program in late 2023.

It is anticipated planning and procurement activities will occur during the remainder of 2024, with construction to be completed during 2025.

“This is something that we have been planning for a while and something that we spent a lot of time working on with the community, particularly the users at the Exhibition Centre,” Wagga City Council manager of city growth and regional assets Ben Creighton said.

“It’s really great that we’ve been able to progress the design over the past 12 months and now that we’ve been able to get the funding, we’ll be able to look at implementing this project over the next 12 months.

Mr Creighton said the plans to upgrade the Hammond Avenue Marshalls Creek Bridge would not affect the Kooringal Road side of the bridge or the proposed track following its construction.

“The Hammond Avenue widening won’t impact what we’re proposing to do here at all,” he said.

“We’re only focusing on the Kooringal Road side for the proposed track and the Hammond Avenue side for the bridge widening.

“The bridge on Kooringal Road is obviously quite narrow so the idea is that we’ll build a pedestrian bridge adjacent to the existing travel lanes that are on Kooringal Road.

“Our main concern is the fact that people have been walking across the travel lanes; the best way to address those concerns we believe, is to have that separate pedestrian bridge.”

Works on the active travel track from Kooringal to Forrest Hill are also expected to begin soon with the Vincent Road portion of the track getting closer to completion.
