A father of two and passionate runner is testing his mental and physical limits as he attempts to set a Guinness World Record for the farthest lawn mower push in 24 hours — all to help grant children’s wishes.
Corporal Luke Thompson began his world record attempt today (30 January) at 10 am at Beres Ellwood Oval, Charles Sturt University. He aims to complete the 161-km challenge by 10 am tomorrow to raise funds for Make-A-Wish Australia.
For Cpl Thompson, the world record attempt isn’t just about breaking records but also about overcoming barriers to make dreams come true.
“Make-A-Wish Australia is why I’m out here. I’m going to be pushing boundaries for wishes, pushing my own limitations for all the courageous kids out there across Australia,” Cpl Thompson said.
“Having my own kids and seeing them grow up is so special to me. And the thought of other families out there going through unimaginable challenges resonates with me.
“I want to do something to give back, and that’s why I’m out here.”
Speaking to the media just before he began his world record run, Cpl Thompson said he was feeling mentally and physically prepared.
“I’ve had a good sleep. I’m feeling physically ready to go, but the heat’s going to dictate how fast and how hard I push out here today,” he said.
“I am worried about the heat … it is going to be very challenging, but I’ll try to sustain my pace and not overwork myself throughout the day.
“I’ve got my mum, sister, and my daughter here, and I’ve got a couple of mates from Melbourne for this event.”
The physical trainer at the 1st Recruit Training Battalion, Army Recruit Training Centre Kapooka, took a holistic approach to preparing for the challenge, incorporating both running and strength training.
“The body’s got to be strong to endure the distance,” Cpl Thompson said.
“We’re feeling good. The support crew is ready, I’m ready — hopefully, it all comes together today, and we can go past this 161-kilometre mark.”
Cpl Thompson covered 1.5 kilometres within 10 minutes of starting the challenge.
If you would like to take part in Cpl Thompson’s world record attempt, head to Beres Ellwood Oval at Charles Sturt University to cheer him on or run a few laps to show your support.
