A local chemist will take over mail services in Coleambally after the current licensed post office closes, though the town will no longer have postal banking, bill paying or PO box services.

Earlier this month, locals were shocked to learn the only mail service in town, run by Ledwidge Pty Ltd from 33-35 Brolga Place since 2014, will cease operating on Friday 6 February.

But Australia Post says service will not be interrupted, with next door’s Marilyn’s Pharmacy taking over mail services from the next working day.

This chemist is run by pharmacist Ross Myers, who moved to Coleambally from the small North Western NSW town of Baradine in October 2025.

“We are pleased to confirm a new operator will commence running a Community Postal Agency (CPA) from Marilyn’s Pharmacy at 31 Brolga Place in Coleambally from Monday 9 February 2026,” an Australia Post spokesman said.

“The CPA, which will be open from Monday to Friday and also on Saturday mornings, will provide over the counter mail sending and receiving, basic postage assessments plus the sale of stamps and prepaid satchels.

“This comes after a successful process to maintain postal services in the town following notice that the current licensed post office will cease operating on 6 February.”

While this means residents will have a mail service on a Saturday morning for the first time, the downside is that CPAs don’t offer the same level of service as licensed post offices, which also offer banking, BPAY bill payments and PO boxes.

Daniel Griffiths, who manages lawn bowls club the Coleambally Community Club, feels service has been downgraded by Australia Post.

“It’s disappointing, particularly for the elderly in the community, who won’t be able to get to Darlington Point or Griffith for a PO box,” he said.

“They also might not have internet banking and previously used the post office to pay their electricity bill or rates.”

Mr Griffiths moved to Coleambally 11 years ago to run the local pub, and has seen a few key services disappear in his time there.

“We used to have a Westpac in town, and a Commonwealth Bank , but they’re both closed, so we only have the Bendigo Bank left. We’ve also had a newsagency close,” he said.

While’s he’s glad a mail service will remain in town, he wants better communication from Australia Post.

“We had a letter first thing this year letting us know the post office will close, but we haven’t had any other information. We’d appreciate clear communication so we can plan and make arrangements; there are a lot of mixed messages out there,” he said.

Region understands efforts are underway to try to find a replacement PO box service in the town. At present, the closest service is in Darlington Point, which is a 20-minute drive. PO box owners in Coleambally will be notified about refunds and alternative arrangements.
