Griffith police have located and charged a 30-year-old Lavington man who allegedly attempted to rob a Griffith supermarket.
Inspector Glenn Smith informed Region the incident occurred just before 8 pm on Tuesday last week (30 April).
The man was reportedly wearing an orange high visibility jumper, sunglasses and carrying a black duffel bag when he entered the supermarket and demanded a large amount of cigarettes. He allegedly told supermarket staff that he had a firearm, though did not physically show them any weapon.
The 30-year-old allegedly fled the store and ran to a vehicle parked nearby, while being pursued by staff members. Witnesses described the vehicle as a Mitsubishi van with falsified registration plates. The man allegedly drove from the scene at speed along the incorrect side of Yambil Street.
At 11 pm later that day, police found the man asleep inside the white Mitsubishi van in a car park off Railway Street. Police allegedly found clothing worn during the alleged offence in the vehicle and arrested the man and took him to the police station.
The man was later charged with demanding property with menace with the intent to steal, possessing a prohibited drug and traffic offences.
