A NSW Ambulance helicopter flew a man from Griffith Base Hospital to Canberra Hospital after he sustained head injuries in a two-vehicle crash involving a ute and truck in Barellan on the weekend.
At about 3:15 pm on Saturday (21 June), emergency services arrived on the scene on the corner of Barellan Centenary Road and Burley Griffin Way following reports of an accident. Barellan is located 53 km east of Griffith.
Officers attached to Murrumbidgee Police District and Traffic and Highway Patrol Command attended the scene and located a ute and a truck on the westbound lane of the road.
The driver of the ute – a 25-year-old man – was found in a nearby paddock, trapped in his vehicle. He was rescued by emergency services and treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics for head injuries before being taken to Griffith Base Hospital in a critical condition. The man was later flown by helicopter to Canberra Hospital for further treatment.
The driver of the truck – a 62-year-old man – was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to the Griffith Base Hospital for further treatment and mandatory testing.
A crime scene was established and police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
