A 24-year-old man has been extradited from Victoria and appeared before Wagga court today (4 January) charged over an alleged shooting in Deniliquin.
Luke David Fitzmaurice appeared before Deputy Registrar Barber in Wagga Wagga Local Court charged with 18 offences including armed robbery, drug supply and breaking and entering.
He made no application for bail and it was formally refused.
On 27 December, officers from Murray River Police District attended Deniliquin Hospital following reports a 39-year-old man had presented with a gunshot wound to the right foot about 9 pm.
The man was later taken to Bendigo Hospital in a stable condition.
Police established a crime scene at Hussey Lane and MacAuley Street in Deniliquin following inquiries. Specialist officers examined the area on Wednesday, 28 December 2022.
Following further inquiries, Victoria Police officers arrested a 24-year-old man during a vehicle stop in Echuca just before 11:30 am on Saturday (31 December).
During the arrest, officers located and seized a .22 calibre rifle and ammunition from the car.
The 24-year-old man was taken to Bendigo Magistrates Court, where NSW Police detectives sought and were granted his extradition to NSW.
He was then taken to Albury Police Station, where he was charged with break and enter house and steal, discharge firearm and intend to cause grievous bodily harm, robbery armed with offensive weapon causing wounding/grievous bodily harm, and take part in the supply of prohibited drugs.
Police allege the man broke into a home in Harfleur Street, Deniliquin and stole a .22 calibre rifle from the premises on Sunday 25 December 2022.
It will further be alleged that the rifle was used to shoot the 39-year-old man.
Fitzmaurice is to appear before Albury Local Court via audio visual link on 9 January charged with stalking, dishonestly obtaining money by deception, shoplifting, receiving stolen property, possessing three unregistered firearms, possessing three unauthorised firearms, not keeping firearms safely, stealing a motor vehicle, failing to stop for police, breaking and entering, armed robbery, supplying drugs and discharging a firearm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
