A man has died after his car went down an embankment, triggering a partial Hume Highway closure.

A NSW Police spokesperson said that at about 7:50 am today (18 February), emergency services were called to the Hume Highway (near Illalong Road) at Bookham.

A man’s car left the roadway and went down an embankment about 40 kilometres south-west of Yass, police said.

Emergency services responded and started CPR, with NSW Ambulance paramedics continuing treatment.

“However, the male driver died at the scene,” the spokesperson said.

Officers attached to The Hume Police District have started an investigation.

They are being assisted by the Crash Investigation Unit.

Shortly after 10 am NSW Police announced the Hume Highway would be closed at Coolac.

Live Traffic NSW is recommending people allow an extra hour of travel time.

The northbound lanes of the highway have been closed.

“Unless specified otherwise, operators of Class 1,2 [and] 3 vehicles travelling under a notice must consult their relevant enforceable network map to confirm a suitable approved alternative route,” its alert states.

“Operators of Class 1, 2 [and] 3 vehicles travelling under a permit must not travel off the approved route listed in the permit unless an updated permit is obtained from the NHVR.”

Muttama Road, Olympic Highway and Burley Griffin Way are suggested as alternative routes for smaller vehicles.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

Anyone with dashcam footage or information is asked to call Yass Police Station on 02 6226 9399 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Updates to road closures can be followed on Live Traffic NSW’s website or app.
