A man will face court today after allegedly setting a Wagga Wagga venue alight.

Emergency services were called to the Birdy Bar, located on Baylis Street in Wagga Wagga (opposite Myer) at about 3:45 am on Thursday morning (27 August), after reports of a blaze.

Officers attached to Riverina Police District attended, with Fire and Rescue NSW crews working to extinguish the blaze.

Nearby residents were evacuated, though the police spokesperson said there are no reports of injuries.

“The business was destroyed,” they said.

A NSW Police spokesperson said that at about 4:40 pm yesterday, detectives arrested a 42-year-old man at Wagga Wagga Police Station.

He has been charged with dishonestly/for gain damage property by fire/explosive.

He was refused bail and will appear before Bail Division Court 5 later today (28 August).
