Albury man Joel Crighton, 27, has been charged and faced court this week after a child was injured in a suspected hit-and-run in Lavington earlier this year.

At about 7 am on Friday 10 January, emergency services were called to Dick Road after reports a child was hit by a vehicle, which left the scene prior to the arrival of police.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated a four-year-old boy for a suspected head injury, before he was taken to Albury Hospital for treatment before being flown to Royal Melbourne Children’s Hospital for further treatment.

Officers attached to Murray River Police District responded, established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.

Strike Force Bygrave, comprising officers from the Riverina Crash Investigation Unit, was formed to investigate the circumstances of the alleged crash.

As part of the investigation, police seized a Holden Commodore utility, which has undergone forensic examination.

Following extensive inquiries by the Riverina Crash Investigation Unit, police arrested Mr Crighton at about 9:20 am on Tuesday (8 July).

He was taken to Wagga Wagga Police Station where he was charged with six offences – failing to stop and assisting after impact caused injury, negligent driving (no death or grievous bodily harm), causing bodily harm by misconduct when in charge of a motor vehicle, driving whilst disqualified, driving recklessly/furiously or speeding in a manner dangerous and not giving particulars to an injured person.

Mr Crighton was refused bail and appeared at Parramatta Local Court on Wednesday for an initial hearing and will face Albury Local Court on Monday 14 July.
