A 42-year-old man has been charged after allegedly damaging two townhouses under construction at a Griffith building site.

Police allege the man entered the construction site on Crossing Street at about 7:34 pm on Friday (17 July).

CCTV allegedly captured the man walking between two townhouses before going to the rear of the buildings, where police allege he kicked the fire door of one townhouse, damaging the door handle.

Police further allege he kicked the fire door of the second townhouse, causing damage, before jumping a nearby fence and leaving the site.

The alleged damage occurred at the Crossing Street site where not-for-profit Argyle Housing is building four affordable housing townhouses. The project has been under construction for several years after being delayed by the collapse of a Sydney-based contractor. Work resumed late last year after a Griffith builder was appointed to complete the development, which is nearing completion.

At about 1:45 pm the following day (Saturday 18 July), police responded to reports of a man allegedly throwing objects around the rear of a retail clothing store on Banna Avenue.

The man was arrested and taken to Griffith Police Station.

Police allege he was already on bail for offences in Canberra at the time of the alleged incidents.

He was charged with entering enclosed lands and destroying or damaging property.

Bail was refused.
