A man has been charged with multiple offences after allegedly setting his dog on police after being pulled over for speeding.

At about midday on Friday (3 October), officers from Hay Highway Patrol stopped a 58-year-old male driver over an alleged speeding offence on the Cobb Highway at Pretty Pine, a small southern Riverina town near Deniliquin.

The driver allegedly provided a positive drug test and was placed under arrest.

A search of his vehicle was conducted, where 90 grams of cannabis and a large hunting knife were allegedly located and seized.

The driver was unable to supply a sample of saliva at the scene and was advised he would be required to attend the hospital to provide a sample of his blood.

The driver refused and was issued a court attendance notice on the side of the road.

After being issued his paperwork, the driver walked to his vehicle and released a large dog from the rear tray of his utility.

The driver allegedly attempted to set the dog onto police. He was arrested for a second time by police, when he allegedly assaulted an arresting officer.

The driver was taken to Deniliquin Police Station where he was charged with multiple offences and refused bail.
