The quality of the region’s dairy supply has been put on show for the world to see with Riverina Fresh claiming the top spot at the National Barista Championships in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The competition sees contestants use milk suppliers from around the world in their bid to claim the title of the best barista in the gulf state.
The UAE has seen a boom in coffee consumption since the turn of the century with many considering the barista competition one of the most prestigious in the world.
Barista Aldy Nugraha partnered with Riverina Fresh and its Riverina Gold line of milk over the three-day competition, ultimately claiming the top spot and title of Barista of the Year.
Riverina Fresh currently works with 20 dairy farmers across the region and delivers to supermarkets nationwide.
It congratulated Mr Nugraha for his success and for showcasing the quality of Riverina-produced dairy to the world.
“What a journey it’s been,” a statement said.
“From packing our milk in Melbourne to flying 14 hours to Dubai, we did it so the talented Aldy Nugraha could work his magic with the best of the best, Riverina Fresh Gold.
“We extend a huge congratulations to Aldy for his success. We’re honoured to be a part of it!”
The award has sparked conversations about the Riverina’s quality of dairy and produce, with Blighty-based dairy farmer Lachlan Marshall believing it is among the best products in the world.
“It fills me with immense pride to see Riverina dairy products shared with the rest of the world,” he said.
“It’s a progressive dairying community here that is very passionate about what they do, but also driven to be the best they can be. This is a really dynamic region with farmers doing everything they can to deliver the best product possible.
“We work 365 days a year to make sure that we deliver the best dairy possible and I think Riverina Fresh’s win is a testament to that.
“Our dairy industry is world-class. The quality of our product and the effort we put into it showcases the importance of our industry and our animals.
“It really is world-class and this is just a reflection of where our industry is at.”
The dairy industry has been in rapid decline in the Riverina over the past 20 years, due to milk deregulation and unfavourable water policies.
Mr Marshall said he wanted to see agriculture in the Riverina thrive.
“I’m incredibly proud of the work the farmers of this region put into their craft,” he said.
“We really do go above and beyond to produce some of the best dairy in the world.”
