A Leeton teenager will front court after a police pursuit in which the driver allegedly tried to flee police on foot before being caught, breath tested and revealed to be under the influence of alcohol.

At about 9:56 pm on Friday (22 August), the 19-year-old man was observed driving a LDV T-60 utility travelling in an easterly direction on to Dooley Lane in Leeton.

The vehicle stopped at an intersection, at which time officers activated their warning lights to direct the young man to pull over. However, the driver allegedly accelerated away from police and a pursuit was initiated.

Throughout the pursuit, police will allege the driver was observed travelling at excessive speed and travelling in the wrong direction through a one-way street.

The driver eventually turned into a car park with a dead end. He allegedly fled from the vehicle on foot, but police quickly caught and arrested him.

The 19-year-old was taken to Leeton Police Station where he underwent a breath analysis, which allegedly returned a reading of 0.099 grams of alcohol in 210 litres of breath.

Police confirmed the driver was the holder of a New South Wales P2 Provisional C Class licence at the time, a category under which a driver is not allowed to have any alcohol in their system.

The driver’s licence was immediately suspended and the man was issued with a Court attendance notice for the offences of ‘Driving with middle range PCA’ and ‘police pursuit’.
