Wagga Wagga Junior Rugby Union Club has beaten more than 500 clubs to be named the Cadbury Club of the Year at the Rugby Australia Awards.

Rugby Australia held its annual Rugby Australia Awards night in Sydney last week to celebrate the achievements of grassroots rugby across the country, with the biggest award of the night being the Cadbury Club of the Year.

One hundred and five clubs from across the country were nominated for the award from a pool of more than 500, with the award’s main criteria focusing on the clubs’ ability to highlight the importance of creating inclusive and safe environments while celebrating the vital role of volunteers in the rugby community.

Wagga Wagga Junior Rugby Union Club took home the major prize of $15,000 worth of rugby equipment, providing essential resources to help foster the club’s growth. Seven minor prizes of $5000 were awarded to other clubs around the country, also recognising their commitment to the sport.

Director of Community Rugby at Rugby Australia Michael Procajlo said the hard work and dedication shown by the Wagga Juniors was remarkable and had set the example for the rest of the country.

“Their initiatives such as financial assistance for players, hosting the Classic Wallabies, supporting local school gala days and their planned fundraiser for the redevelopment of Conolly Rugby Park, showcases their commitment to rugby in the region,” he said.

“Wagga Wagga has championed inclusivity throughout their club with initiatives that truly embody the spirit of the Cadbury Club of the Year.

“From fundraising efforts that support players and volunteers to organising pre- and post-season tours with Clovelly, these actions highlight their commitment to their community.”

Treasurer of Wagga Wagga Junior Rugby Club Jolene Green said the club had worked hard to create a welcoming, safe and inclusive environment by prioritising positive club culture and actively promoting respectful conduct among parents and players.

“Our commitment to inclusivity extends to providing financial support for players who may not otherwise have the means to participate in our sport, ensuring that no-one is excluded due to financial constraint,” she said.

“We have strengthened both our club and our wider community, creating a supportive and positive environment for all members.”

Mondelez International Vice President Marketing in Australia/New Zealand and brand custodian of Cadbury Ben Wicks said the Cadbury Club of the Year award not only honoured these vital community clubs but also reflected Cadbury’s enduring support for grassroots sports.

“By providing valuable resources, we aim to strengthen their programs and ensure a bright future for rugby in Australia,” he said.

“As an iconic brand, we believe in the power of generosity and the importance of investing in our communities and the next generation of athletes.”
