A Victorian learner driver had his driving privileges withdrawn after he was allegedly caught speeding at 157 km/h on the Hume Highway.
Officers from the Riverina Highway Patrol Gundagai were patrolling north on the Hume Highway near Kyeamba when they detected a black BMW hatchback travelling south at 157 km/h in the signposted 110 km/h zone at around 4:50 pm on 25 September. At the time, the road conditions were wet due to recent rainfall.
The officers stopped the vehicle shortly after, and the driver produced a Victorian Class C Learner’s Permit. A fully licensed holder was sitting next to him at the time of the stop, and an L plate was visible in the front left corner of the windscreen.
“I don’t recall doing 150,” the driver told police when questioned about his speed.
When police spoke to the supervisor, he mentioned that he “might have been dozing.”
The driver underwent drug and alcohol testing, with the initial drug test returning a positive indication of a combination of cannabis and cocaine. Secondary testing was conducted roadside, yielding a further positive result. Police are now awaiting the results of forensic analysis related to the drug test.
The learner driver was issued a $1,097 infringement notice for exceeding the speed limit by more than 30 km/h, which also carries five demerit points. His driving privileges within NSW were immediately withdrawn for three months, and he was also issued a 24-hour Notice of Prohibition of Driving due to the positive drug test.
The supervisor was also issued an infringement notice for failing to supervise the learner driver.
