A 65-year-old Hillston man will face court after allegedly allowing his 14-year-old nephew to use his rifle – a weapon with which the boy accidentally shot himself.
Griffith acting inspector Paul Rosano informed Region the incident allegedly occurred at 4 pm on Sunday, 8 September.
The older man was a licensed firearm holder who allegedly permitted his 14-year-old nephew to use a .22 calibre rifle on his farm at a property on Mays Road, Hillston.
The teenager was chasing a crow on foot in a paddock when he tripped, causing him to fall and discharge the loaded firearm he was carrying into his right elbow. A .22 calibre round entered the 14-year-old’s flesh near the right elbow area and exited about two inches after entry.
His uncle was 50 yards from his nephew at the time and ran over to render first aid via compression strategies before driving his nephew to Hillston Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The 14-year-old was airlifted to Westmead Hospital for further treatment/assessment.
The 65-year-old had his firearms and ammunition seized and his firearms licence suspended by police. The licence holder allegedly admitted he permitted his nephew to use the gun and is set to face court, charged with allowing/permitting the minor to possess a firearm.
