Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council (CGRC) is asking the wider community for input on its Cycleways Plan.
CGRC said a safe cycling network gave people more transport options.
“Strong evidence shows that safe, connected cycling infrastructure is essential to making bike riding a viable transport option for most people,” CGRC said in a statement.
“When cyclists feel safe, riding a bike can be an easy and enjoyable way to get around.”
CGRC said it was developing a 10-year Cycleways Plan to align with the key principles and objectives identified in the 2022 Community Strategic Plan to achieve pathway network infrastructure and maintenance that respected community expectations and needs.
“The plan is intended to provide the framework for developing cycleway routes that are intuitive and comfortable to use, separated from motor vehicles and pedestrians where needed, and designed to connect communities with important destinations across the region,” CGRC said.
Cycleways plans are designed to increase the number of people riding by expanding bike networks.
The council intends to make cycling a low-stress and convenient transport option.
“The plan recognises and supports the growing use of various bikes and mobility devices, including electric bikes and trikes, cargo bikes, child and dog carriers, assisted wheelchairs and electric mobility scooters,” CGRC said.
“It addresses problems and high-stress safety issues on existing cycleways and popular bike routes as the bike network is expanded.
It also ensures that an organisation-wide approach to cycling is integrated into all aspects of the council’s planning and functions.”
Additionally, the plan details initiatives, facilities, and information that would support people riding a bike and help people appreciate the community-wide benefits of more people cycling.
The plan will assist with expanding the bike network in the CGRC communities and support more people riding bikes.
CGRC said community consultation and feedback were vital in developing the Cycleways Plan.
