Griffith City Council has begun installing 20 new CCTV cameras along Yambil Street, expanding surveillance coverage in the CBD following a number of alleged incidents in and around the city centre over the past 12 months.

The move comes after police investigations into a woman who allegedly caught someone attempting to climb into her bedroom window, the slashing of 48 tyres on Banna Avenue, the defacing of street art murals, and after a Leeton man was accused of trying to steal a forklift while drunk before ordering food on Kooyoo Street.

The new cameras are being installed between Kookora and Daines streets and will bring the total number of CCTV cameras across Griffith’s CBD to 121.

The expanded network will provide additional coverage of one of the city’s busiest commercial areas, with footage monitored by Griffith Police and available to be viewed live or retrieved as part of investigations.

Griffith Mayor Doug Curran said the additional cameras would help improve public safety while also supporting police.

“The cameras will not only help deter crime, they will also assist police investigations and provide valuable evidence in the event of an incident,” Mayor Curran said.

Council said it also hoped the expanded network would help reduce vandalism, graffiti and other anti-social behaviour within the city centre.

The new cameras are equipped with high-resolution lenses and are capable of recording 24 hours a day, seven days a week, helping ensure comprehensive coverage throughout the precinct.

The installation represents a significant investment in the safety and security of Griffith’s CBD and reflects council’s ongoing commitment to creating a safe, welcoming and vibrant city centre.

The additional cameras will complement an already extensive surveillance network across the CBD, with footage regularly used by police investigating incidents and identifying offenders.

Council has confirmed planning has also commenced for the final stage of CCTV works in Yambil Street, with further upgrades expected to strengthen coverage across the precinct.
