Griffith motorists are being warned of significant traffic changes in the coming weeks, with upgrade work set to close the busy Blumer Avenue rail crossing and construction continuing at Willbriggie bend.

The Blumer Avenue level crossing, near the Exies Bagtown Club, will be closed at certain times in September and October while Transport for NSW carries out upgrades.

The work includes installing new pedestrian safety barriers, level crossing panels and boom gates.

The upgrade is scheduled to continue from Monday 31 August to Monday 30 November, weather permitting.

The Blumer Avenue crossing will be closed:

  • From 5 am Saturday 12 September until 6 pm Monday 14 September
  • From 7 am Monday 28 September until 3 pm Sunday 11 October.

A two-kilometre detour will be in place via Blumer Avenue, Wakaden Street, Crossing Street and Banna Avenue while the crossing is closed.

Partial lane closures and traffic control will also be in place to protect workers and motorists.

The Blumer Avenue crossing is not the location where train shunting sometimes occurs.

Shunting is carried out at the Crossing and Ullong streets crossings, which has attracted complaints from motorists inconvenienced by the activity during peak periods.

Motorists are being urged to drive to the conditions and follow traffic signs and the directions of traffic controllers.

Meanwhile, motorists travelling south of Griffith are being warned of changed traffic conditions on Kidman Way as work continues at Willbriggie bend, the site of February’s fatal truck crash.

Traffic will be switched onto the new southbound lane of Kidman Way from Wednesday 2 September, allowing work to move to the northbound lane towards Griffith.

Work on the northbound lane will be carried out between 6 am and 6 pm from Monday to Saturday, with work on Sundays as required, until November, weather permitting.

Silo Road remains closed between Kidman Way and Cotterill Road, with a detour in place via Adams and Cotterill roads.

Single-lane closures, traffic control and a reduced speed limit of 40 km/h will be in place while work is underway.

Outside work hours, the speed limit will be reduced to 60 km/h.

Oversize and overmass (OSOM) vehicles wider than 4.5 metres will be escorted through the worksite.

Motorists are advised to allow an extra 10 minutes for their journey, drive to the conditions and follow the directions of traffic controllers and signs.

Transport for NSW has thanked motorists for their patience while the work is carried out.
