A 19-year-old Griffith man allegedly led police on a foot chase through the heart of the city’s CBD before being arrested inside a supermarket.

Police allege the man was first spotted at a Cedar Crescent address on 26 May while in breach of an Apprehended Violence Order (AVO). Officers claim he fled through a rear yard and jumped a fence, avoiding arrest at the time.

More than two weeks later, about 1:50 pm on Wednesday, 10 June, officers conducting patrols along Yambil Street allegedly spotted the same man walking along the footpath.

Checks revealed he was still wanted by police.

Police allege the man attempted to hide when he noticed the patrol vehicle, before taking off on foot.

Officers chased him through several streets, including Yambil and Ulong, before the pursuit spilled onto a busy Banna Avenue.

The chase ended when the man allegedly ducked into a small supermarket in an attempt to evade police.

Officers entered the store and found the man in one of the aisles, where he was arrested.

He was taken to Griffith Police Station and charged with breaching an AVO.

He is expected to face Griffith Local Court at a later date.
