A Griffith man allegedly thought he had found a handy hiding spot for drugs — in the centre console of his Mitsubishi Triton.

Unfortunately for the 40-year-old, police allegedly watched him put items inside the console before they even got out of their vehicle.

Police were conducting proactive patrols in Gordon Avenue, North Griffith, about 9:45 pm on Saturday (12 September) when they allegedly spotted a Mitsubishi Triton parked on the road with a man in the driver’s seat.

Police pulled in behind the vehicle and activated their warning signals.

They allege they then watched the man lift the Mitsubishi’s centre console display, put items inside and close it again before the officers approached.

Police searched the man and vehicle after allegedly forming a suspicion he was in possession of prohibited drugs.

During the search, police allegedly lifted the centre console display and found the items they had seen the man put inside.

They allegedly found a small, black zipped bag with an orange stripe containing scales and a large number of small resealable bags, a new water pipe and a magnetic black box attached to metal.

Inside the magnetic box were five small resealable bags allegedly containing a white crystal substance.

Police also allegedly found $600 in cash.

The man was arrested and taken to Griffith Police Station, where the white crystal substance was weighed and a presumptive test allegedly returned a positive result for methylamphetamine.

The man was charged with supplying a prohibited drug, two counts of possessing a prohibited drug and recklessly dealing with the proceeds of crime.

He was refused bail by police before appearing in Bail Division Court 5 on Sunday (13 September).

He was granted conditional bail and is due to appear before Griffith Local Court on Wednesday, 23 September.
