A Griffith man allegedly accelerated away from police before getting out of his car and walking towards officers following a short pursuit through the city.

The 31-year-old was arrested after police allegedly spotted him driving a black Nissan Qashqai while disqualified on Sunday afternoon.

At about 3:10 pm on 30 August, police were patrolling Merrigal Street when they allegedly observed the Nissan travelling north on Noorla Street.

Police suspected the vehicle was being driven by a disqualified driver and conducted a U-turn before following it.

Police allege the Nissan drove straight through the stop sign at the railway crossing on Goondooloo Street at speed.

The vehicle allegedly continued through several streets as police activated their lights and sirens to signal the driver to stop.

Police allege the Nissan accelerated at speed, prompting a pursuit through several streets before it stopped in Salvanza Crescent.

The driver allegedly got out of the vehicle and began walking towards the police car.

Police then directed him to lie on the ground until further officers arrived.

He was arrested and taken to Griffith Police Station.

Police allege checks of the RMS system revealed the man had never held a driver’s licence in any state of Australia and was serving a disqualification period preventing him from obtaining a licence until September 2028.

The man was also subjected to an oral fluid test, which allegedly gave a positive indication for cocaine and methylamphetamine.

A second oral fluid sample was obtained and sent for further testing.

The man was charged with driving a motor vehicle during a disqualification period and police pursuit – not stop, drive recklessly.

He was refused bail by police and appeared before Bail Division Court 5 on 31 August, where bail was refused.

He is next due to appear before Griffith Local Court on 9 September.
