A 22-year-old Griffith man allegedly called his mother as police moved in during a roadside drug bust — before officers allegedly found cannabis, methylamphetamine, cash and a set of scales.
Police were conducting proactive patrols in Griffith about 1:45 pm on Thursday (August 27) when they allegedly spotted the man riding a purple mountain bike without an approved helmet in MacArthur Street, North Griffith.
The officers indicated for him to stop, and he did so a short time later.
Police will allege that as officers began speaking with the man, he started calling his mother.
Checks allegedly revealed the man was already subject to strict bail conditions relating to drug possession.
Police will further allege they noticed a small, clear resealable bag protruding from the top of a satchel hanging over his shoulder.
The bag allegedly contained a large number of small, clear resealable plastic bags.
During a search, police allegedly found a clear resealable plastic bag containing multiple smaller bags filled with green vegetable matter believed to be cannabis.
They also allegedly found a small resealable bag containing methylamphetamine, along with $650 in $50 notes, $40 in $20 notes and $10 in $5 notes.
Several unused resealable bags and a small set of scales were also allegedly seized.
The man was arrested and taken to Griffith Police Station.
Police will allege that while he was being charged, the man threatened an officer.
He was charged with two counts of possessing a prohibited drug, recklessly dealing with the proceeds of crime and intimidating a police officer in the execution of their duty.
The man was refused bail and appeared before Bail Division Court 5, where bail was again refused.
He will next appear before Griffith Local Court on 2 September 2026.
