An 18-year-old who was allegedly riding an unregistered dirt bike while under the influence of alcohol in Griffith has been arrested by police, who chased him across Ted Scobie Oval and then found him hiding in a hedge after he crashed his vehicle.

District Inspector Glenn Smith told Region the incident happened around 3 am on Sunday (15 December).

Police saw an unregistered Yamaha YZ250 dirt bike travelling in an easterly direction on Blumer Avenue and then turning right into Doolan Crescent.

Officers will allege the rider, from Griffith, appeared to be intentionally revving the vehicle to entice the police to chase him.

Police attempted to stop the vehicle by activating all warning signals, but the rider allegedly refused to comply. The motorcyclist then entered the Ted Scobie Oval car park in Doolan Crescent. While police were still following, the bike attempted to cross the oval. In doing so, the rider mounted the gutter of the carpark, causing him to lose control of the vehicle and crash onto the grass. The rider got up and allegedly started to run away from police.

The man was found a short while later hiding in a hedge beside a church about 200 metres away from where the rider came off the bike.

He was arrested and subjected to a roadside breath test, which returned a positive result.

The rider was then taken to Griffith Police Station for a breath analysis, which returned a reading of 0.023 (Special Prescribed Concentration) grams of alcohol per 210 litres of breath.

A check on his licence revealed it was suspended. As the man was not permitted to have any alcohol in his system, he was directed to attend court to face a drink-driving charge.
