Griffith’s Commonwealth Bank will serve its customers in a temporary 40 foot converted shipping container while its Banna Avenue branch is being refurbished.

The closure of the bank had caught some customers by surprise, who posted their concerns on social media. While they had been told they could use the ATM at the Westpac bank next door, that facility was out of order on the weekend.

A spokesperson for the Commonwealth Bank said an ATM and face-to-face service would be operational from today (18 June) via the pop-up facility located on Railway Parade behind Griffith Post Office.

The pop-up branch is a converted 40 ft shipping container with all the security features of a regular branch.

It has one ATM with deposit functionality (cash and cheques), telling services and one office. It is connected to the CBA network via the Telstra 4G network.

The pop-up is also wheelchair-friendly with retractable awnings to keep customers dry.

The shipping container will be open until the main branch on Banna Avenue reopens in around two months.

“We’re investing around $4 million in our Griffith presence and look forward to welcoming customers to our new branch in August 2025,” a spokesperson said.

In addition to teller counters, private meeting rooms and waiting areas, the new branch fit-out will feature the latest in banking technology, including 24/7 access to ATMs (with instant cash and coin deposit capability), accessibility features, and digital media walls.

Griffith Commonwealth Bank account holders can also withdraw their cash using other ATMs across town without incurring extra fees.

Customers can also make deposits and withdrawals at Australia Post.
