Wagga’s own Patrick Voss will be lacing up the boots for the AFL Grand Final this weekend to help guide the Fremantle Dockers to their first-ever premiership against the Brisbane Lions.
The 52-game player joined the AFL in 2022 as the 11th player picked in the preseason rookie draft as a forward for the Essendon Bombers.
Despite being on the Bombers’ list for two seasons, the luckless tall was never able to crack their senior side and was delisted following the end of the 2023 season.
Just prior to the 2024 season, Voss was invited to the Dockers in a pre-season training camp before he was officially added to the squad as a supplemental selection signing, essentially filling a vacant spot in the club’s line-up.
Quickly impressing the Dockers’ coaches, Voss played his first game in round seven of the 2024 season against the Western Bulldogs. He kicked his first AFL goal 10 minutes into the second quarter, helping the Dockers to win by 24 points.
Since making his debut, Voss has quickly become one of the more polarising characters in the competition, even referring to himself as a villain in a recent interview with Fox Footy.
Despite his on-field reputation, the 195 cm forward has inspired many from his junior club, the Turvey Park Bulldogs.
Voss played most of his junior football for the Bulldogs before being selected to take part in the Greater Western Sydney Giants junior academy program.
In his last few years at school, he made the move to Wesley College and played for the Oakleigh Chargers in the Under 18s Talent League, the same team Brownlow Medalists Nick Daicos and Matt Rowell played in.
The Turvey Park Bulldogs still lay claim to the star, however, and will be cheering on their young champion on Saturday.
“From Auskick to the 2026 AFL Grand Final — what an incredible journey!” the Bulldogs said.
“We’ve had the privilege of watching Pat grow through the Turvey ranks, and seeing his hard work, resilience and dedication rewarded on the biggest stage is something we couldn’t be prouder of.
“Congratulations, Pat! Best of luck to you and the Fremantle Dockers in this weekend’s grand final. We’ll be cheering you on all the way from Wagga.”
The AFL Grand Final will be played at the MCG on Saturday 26 September. First bounce will begin at 2:30 pm.
The grand final can only be watched on Channel Seven or on the 7 Plus app.
