Deeply rooted in his community and experienced in hospitality, Wayne Mutton has taken the reins as the new general manager of Wagga RSL Club.
Mr Mutton, who has been with the club since 2016, was recently appointed to the role following Andrew Bell’s retirement after 27 years as general manager.
“I started as a junior manager, then moved into HR. With Andrew retiring at the end of last year, I put my hand up for the role,” Mr Mutton told Region.
“I’m incredibly honoured to take on this position and lead the Wagga RSL Club into its next chapter. This club holds a special place in our community, and I’m committed to ensuring it remains a welcoming, supportive, and connected space.
“I look forward to working with our dedicated team to build on our strong foundation and deliver great experiences for our members and guests.”
Just one week into his new role, Mr Mutton described the transition as a whirlwind.
“It’s been exciting, and I’m fortunate to have the support of the board. We have a great management team and around 160 fantastic staff,” he said.
“I really appreciate the wonderful comments on social media and am grateful for the opportunity. I just hope to do a good job.”
When asked about his vision as general manager, Mr Mutton said he saw the club as a cornerstone of the Wagga community.
“The club is in a fantastic position, and we’re really lucky. We are currently midway through renovations, aiming to complete them by the end of the year, which will provide our members with a fantastic modern space,” he said.
“It’s a wonderful facility, and we want to continue giving back to community groups. That remains a key focus for us.
“Ultimately, we want to be a place where people feel comfortable gathering. Our focus remains on bringing people together, and we are committed to ensuring that continues.”
Born and raised in Coolamon, Mr Mutton moved to Wagga in the late 1990s to pursue tertiary education. He then spent 15 years at Romanos Hotel before joining the Wagga RSL Club.
The 46-year-old said his wife and two children were supportive of his move and happy with his new role.
When he isn’t at the club, Mr Mutton spends time with his family, engaging in his children’s activities, watching AFL games, and attending race meetings.
Wagga RSL Club president Jane Barnes welcomed Mr Mutton as the new general manager.
“Wayne has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to our club, our staff, and our members,” Ms Barnes said.
“His people skills, combined with his deep understanding of our operations, will ensure that the Wagga RSL Club continues to thrive.
“Wayne is a respected leader who understands our club’s important role in bringing people together, supporting our community, and providing a welcoming space for all.
“We are confident that under his leadership, the club will continue to grow and evolve while staying true to the values that have made it such an important part of Wagga.”
