ErinEarth is well into its preparations for the upcoming Winter Lantern Festival to celebrate the long, chilly nights.

The community is invited to enjoy nature by lantern light and experience the wonders of the universe and night sky on Saturday 6 July, from 4 to 8 pm at ErinEarth’s garden.

ErinEarth garden manager Eltan Mestan said the second Winter Lantern Festival would have a host of attractions.

“We’re going to have a lot of campfires around the place for people to sit around,” Eltan said. “We will be cooking some kangaroo stew and damper on those.

“We’ll have lanterns up in the gardens and live music by a couple of different performers as well.

“We’ll have some Indigenous dancing and storytime for kids on pillows and beanbags.”

Eltan said there would be a moonlight cinema on the night showing environmental films and animations for children.

This year’s event also includes spotlighting of nocturnal mammals and pollinators in the trees, kids’ activities in the hub and storytime.

The stories are First Nations stories written by people from Wagga about the region.

“Kids activities include making Indigenous or native animals out of leaves, stones and sticks,” Eltan said.

“It’s bigger this year … being in our garden, around fires, eating nice food with good company.

“Come along and have a good time.”

Eltan said the preparation for the night was “hectic” but coming along well.

“We’re looking forward to and more prepared to have more people than last year,” he said.

The garden manager said last year’s festival attracted close to 500 visitors and he believed the same number could be expected this year.

He said the garden hoped to run the festival once a year around the solstice, with positive feedback from visitors last year.

Hot food and drinks will be available for purchase at night. The event has a limited capacity. Visit Winter Lantern Festival and grab tickets now to secure your place.
