English cricket icon and former captain Sir Ian Botham has made a surprise trip to the Wagga Wagga Country Club for a charity golf event.
The English legend played more than 100 Test matches for the Three Lions as well as 116 One Day Internationals and is often considered one of the greatest all-rounders the sport has ever seen.
Sir Ian ‘Beefy’ Botham is known for his fiery demeanour and fierce rivalry with former Australian captain Ian Chappell. The duo battled it out on several occasions, with Botham’s crowning moment coming in the 1981 Ashes series, when he took five wickets for one run to steal victory.
Ian Botham took 528 wickets across all international formats and scored more than 7300 runs including 14 Test centuries and claimed 27 five-wicket-hauls.
Sir Botham is visiting Wagga to play in the Wagga Wagga Country Club’s Jarrod Lyle Golf Day which will be raising money for children with cancer.
Jarrod Lyle was diagnosed with leukaemia at 17 in 1999 but became a successful Australian professional golfer. He won twice on the Nationwide Tour and played several seasons on the US PGA Tour; his best finish was tied for 4th place in the 2012 Northern Trust Open.
As a public figure, Jarrod advocated for Challenge, increasing awareness and raising funds to support other families facing a cancer diagnosis. In 2017, Jarrod’s cancer returned for the third time. Subsequent treatment limited his playing time, and in July 2018, Jarrod decided to stop treatment. Jarrod passed away on 8 August 2018 at 36, surrounded by his loved ones.
Sir Botham will return to the Country Club on Friday (28 February) where he will be completing his second round of competition.
