The GIANTS Super Netball team is expected to return to Wagga’s Equex Stadium in 2025 after Wagga Wagga City Council announced it had entered an agreement with the club.

Off the back of a successful tour of the Riverina earlier this year, the GIANTS approached WWCC to repeat the trip in either February or March 2025.

The 2024 visit was backed by the Wagga Wagga and Griffith communities, with both games being sellouts, the Wagga match in less than half an hour. More than 500 people were put on waitlists in the hope tickets would be resold or more would become available.

“One of the main things when we built the multipurpose stadium out at the Equex Centre was so we will have the capacity to deliver these sort of events,” WWCC manager of city growth and regional assets Ben Creighton said.

“Having these sorts of events now is really starting to realise the potential of the stadium. It’s something that we’re going to continue to work on over the coming years to try and get these sorts of events continuously visiting the city.

“It’s not only great from our economic point of view, bringing people to the city, but it’s also great from a social point of view, on the terms that we’ve got elite-level sports that people can actually go and see in Wagga without having to pay for the accommodation and travel expenses.”

Mr Creighton said the GIANTS had been keen to return to the region, having had both their men’s and women’s AFL teams visiting Robinson Oval in previous years before the Super Netball team’s visit in March this year.

“The event [the netball] itself was very well received,” he said.

“I know the GIANTS were really happy with the stadium and the other activities around it. I think it’s important to note that when the GIANTS visit, it’s not just a game; other activities like training camps and school visits are attached to it as well. It’s a real community-driven event, which is just as important.”

Tickets for next year’s preseason match are expected to become available once the fixture is finalised in January.
