Construction of the purpose-built Duke of Kent community building in Wagga is set to start in the coming weeks, weather permitting.
Wagga Wagga City Council said it had started work on the highly anticipated facility, with the existing building having already been demolished.
The $800,000 project will provide a new home for two local clubs and other community groups.
The facility will be on the south-east corner of the Duke of Kent Oval at 26 Shaw Street.
It will accommodate the Wagga Wagga Veteran and Vintage Motor Club, University of the Third Age members, and other community groups.
Council project manager Henry Collie said the site was currently being cleared of debris to allow construction to begin.
“The next steps are to survey the site and set out the footprint of the building,” Mr Collie said.
“Depending on the weather, the community should start seeing significant progress over the next few months.”
The council said during construction work, several parking bays on Kent Crescent would be unavailable to the public.
The community building, to be built on the former site of the Wagga Women’s Bowling Club rooms, is expected to be completed by the end of June 2023.
It will offer meeting rooms, a kitchen and other amenities that are being finalised in talks with user groups.
The development proposal for the hall was submitted by Adaptive Interiors.
The council accepted the tender offer from Adaptive Interiors for the design and construction of the building for the lump-sum amount of $695,720 in October 2021.
At a public auction late last year, the council sold the Wagga Wagga Veteran and Vintage Motor Club building site at 205 Morgan Street.
The site was sold with a commitment to the tenants to find alternative accommodation and make way for a $180 million multi-storey office building and a six-level carpark.
Wagga Council said it considered alternative locations for community buildings through investigations and user group discussions.
