A 22-year-old South Australian man allegedly hurled cans of energy drink at police during a 100-kilometre pursuit through the Riverina before the chase ended with his car becoming entangled in a farm fence near Darlington Point.

Police allege the man had earlier been involved in petrol drive-offs in South Australia and Balranald before he was spotted travelling along the Sturt Highway near Hay.

About 2:30 pm on 25 September, police allege the man committed a petrol drive-off at a Balranald service station while driving a white Nissan Pulsar.

About an hour later, police at Hay allegedly spotted the vehicle on the Sturt Highway and attempted to stop it.

Police allege the driver failed to stop and a pursuit began.

During the chase, which continued for about 100 km towards Darlington Point, officers allege the driver threw multiple cans of energy drink towards the pursuing police vehicle.

Police eventually deployed road spikes near Darlington Point.

The driver allegedly left the highway and entered a farm paddock in an attempt to avoid the spikes.

Police allege he later tried to leave the paddock but encountered another set of road spikes at the entrance gate.

The driver allegedly attempted to drive through a fence but became entangled, allowing police to arrest him.

He was taken to Griffith Police Station and charged with police pursuit — not stopping and driving recklessly, throwing a missile at a police officer executing duty, intentionally throwing an object at a vehicle, destroying or damaging property and custody of a knife in a public place.

The man was refused bail by police and appeared before Bail Division Court 5 on 26 September, where bail was again refused.

He is due to appear before Griffith Local Court on 7 October.
