With winter sports in full flight at Wagga’s sporting grounds on weekends, one question is top of mind: Where do families park their cars?
Many parents have been left frustrated following recent rain in the Riverina.
“Jubilee Park is where I spend most of my weekend, as all my kids play some kind of sport there,” Annette Stock said.
“This weekend, the parking or at least the conditions we had to park in, were ridiculous.
“With so many people there for all the different sports, the main parking area, which, to be fair, is one of the better spots in Wagga, was packed out. It meant we, like a lot of other cars, had to park on Red Hill Road.
“The rain made it muddy and gross, and it’s on a street that has a higher speed limit than the rest of the town. That can’t be safe on multiple levels.
“I know it’s not just Jubilee either; I know families who have soccer or cricket depending on the time of year at Bolton Park, who are forced to park outside of the main parking area.
“It’s great to see children’s sports doing well, but we need to find a safe way to park cars in these places, especially if they are serious about having big competitions at the new tennis centre, Robertson Oval, the Oasis and Bolton Park all at the same time.”
Wagga Wagga City Council (WWCC) said it had not received any formal complaints about the parking conditions at its sports ovals, but encouraged parents to reach out if there were legitimate concerns.
“In previous years, we’ve had discussions with sporting groups and some of the users in that area, around the parking arrangements, that’s something that we continue to monitor. We continue to have discussions, both internally here and with the sporting organisations,” WWCC Strategic Asset Planner Ben Crieghton said.
“We haven’t had any complaints that have come to us at this point in time for this year.
“But as something that we continue to monitor, we know that it is very busy around the sports grounds, particularly with junior sport early in the mornings on the weekend. So we would encourage everyone who’s in those areas to slow down, be aware of the fact that there are more people around, and to take it easy.
“For those people who are participating, please make sure that you use the appropriate crossing point so that it can be done safely.
“If there are concerns, we absolutely encourage people to send it through to council so we can consider the best possible way to address it.”
