Disqualified Griffith driver who allegedly stole Hyundai Accent caught by police after Yambil Street chase

A Hyundai Accent sedan was allegedly stolen and driven by a Griffith man with a disqualified licence, Murrumbidgee Police have reported.

District Inspector Glenn Smith informed Region the vehicle was allegedly taken from the car park of a Griffith supermarket at approximately 7:45 pm on Friday 24 January.

Five days later (28 January), police were contacted in relation to a 36-year-old male causing a disturbance. Police attended this location and obtained details of the male and the vehicle he was driving.

While police were conducting checks, the man got into the driver’s seat of the vehicle and left the scene.

Police identified the vehicle the male had driven off in was the allegedly stolen Hyundai Accent. Police saw the vehicle drive away west along Yambil Street, Griffith. Police followed the vehicle at this time and activated their lights and sirens, indicating for the man to stop, but he allegedly failed to do so and accelerated down Jondaryn Avenue before turning right into Belford Road.

Officers continued pursuit as the accused turned left onto Willandra Avenue, eventually stopping approximately 100 meters down the road. The man was arrested and taken back to the Griffith police station.

The man was charged with driving a vehicle taken without consent of owner, driving a motor vehicle whilst disqualified and not stopping when directed to do so.
