A critical incident investigation is underway following the death of a man in Cootamundra.

Officers attached to Riverina Police District stopped a Honda Civic sedan on Hibernia Street in Stockinbingal at about 6:40 pm last Friday (30 September) for a random roadside drug test.

Police said the 25-year-old male driver allegedly returned a positive reading for a prohibited drug. He was later arrested and taken to Cootamundra Police Station.

Police said NSW Ambulance paramedics were called to the station a short time later due to concerns about the man’s health. He was taken to Cootamundra Hospital, however, he was unable to be revived.

A Critical Incident Team from Murrumbidgee Police District will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The investigation will also be subject to independent review.
