Wagga City Council has received a proposal to improve the public realm of a CBD street which currently has an industrial look and feel.

Council received an offer to enter into a planning agreement with Davtil Pty (Mr Kerry Pascoe) Ltd in relation to the development of 12 Blake Street.

The development proposal states that residential, commercial and industrial development is driving the city’s growth.

According to the proposal, the increase in development would generate additional demand for local infrastructure, including roads, shared paths, open spaces and community facilities.

Acting Wagga City Council general manager Scott Gray said the proposal included improvement to Blake Street through additional infrastructure.

“The proposed offer includes upgrading footpaths, landscape changes, closing access from Blake Street to the council carpark, and increasing on-street parking,” Mr Gray said.

“The value of the infrastructure is approximately $30,000 more than the contributions due.”

The proposal aims to improve the look and feel of Blake Street and includes changing on-street carparking from parallel to angled along both sides of the street, and providing two disabled car parking spaces on the street.

The proposed work would entail installing traffic calming devices at either end of Blake Street and removing 11 trees on the footpath and replacing them with six trees along the western side of Blake Street to shade parking.

The development would also close off access from Blake Street to the carpark at 22 Blake Street, provide landscaping and locate an electrical substation in the carpark. There would also be an upgrade to the footpath along the whole western side of Blake Street.

The proposed planning agreement for Blake Street will be on public exhibition until 5 September. Community and businesses have until 19 September to submit submissions.

There will also be council-led consultation sessions with community and businesses in the weeks to come.

Mr Gray said the public’s responses were critical to the outcome of the proposed planning agreement.
