A 33-year-old Melbourne woman was arrested this morning following a dual-car police chase that travelled across state lines.
Riverina Police confirmed that the woman allegedly broke into a Wagga Wagga business around 1 am on Thursday (2 January). She then allegedly stole a white Toyota Corolla before crashing the vehicle at 3:50 am on the Hume Highway southbound out of Wagga Wagga.
Acting Inspector of Traffic and Highway Patrol Riverina Ben Smith said that Riverina Police had multiple reports that a vehicle had crashed but were unaware at the time that the vehicle was stolen.
“I believe some heavy vehicle drivers stopped to render assistance to a 33-year-old female that had exited that rolled vehicle,” he said.
“Unfortunately, while they were rendering assistance and searching for other victims, that 33-year-old female took upon a seat to steal a fully laden B-double that was running at the location. She then proceeded southbound towards Albury at speed.
“We had numerous units from the Riverina PD engage that heavy vehicle in pursuit. We used stop sticks on that heavy vehicle a number of times.
“Murray River PD became involved in that pursuit. They’ve also used stop sticks on that heavy vehicle. And that heavy vehicle unfortunately entered Victoria, where Victorian Police have taken over the pursuit.”
A statement from Victoria Police confirmed that the woman had been arrested in the stolen truck in Barnawartha around 6:20 am.
“Victoria Police spotted the white Volvo B-double truck, believed to have been stolen from Riverina in NSW, travelling on the Hume Highway in Wodonga about 5:20 am,” the statement reads.
“Stop-sticks were deployed twice, once in NSW and once in Victoria on Hume Highway, successfully deflating the truck’s tyres.
“A 33-year-old St Albans woman was arrested and has been conveyed to hospital where she remains under police guard.
“She is expected to be interviewed by police.”
“Anyone who witnessed the incident, with dash cam/CCTV footage or information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
Traffic and Highway Patrol Riverina Acting Inspector Ben Smith said the woman will be facing some serious charges at the Riverina PD and will be looking at an investigation and possible extradition back to New South Wales.
