The highly anticipated Wagga Wagga Relay for Life is set to return better than ever.
The annual community fundraising event is poised for a fresh start at the Wagga Riverside Precinct in September.
Passionate local volunteers are organising the Relay For Life fundraising challenge for Cancer Council.
Teams of friends, families, and colleagues raise money in the lead-up to an outdoor event where team members take turns walking around a track to signify that cancer never rests.
Alan Pottie, Wagga’s 2023 Citizen of the Year is back at the committee’s helm, with the team inspired to step it up again following years of successful relays.
“Dates have been locked in for Saturday 21 September at the Riverside Precinct,” Mr Pottie said.
“We understand everyone is busy with competing weekend priorities, and we believe it’s about the quality time spent together.
“So, we are acting on community feedback to move this year’s event to a new location with over six hours.”
The new six-hour event by the river allows the community to spend Saturday afternoon with family and friends walking in the fresh air, celebrating carers and survivors, remembering loved ones lost, and supporting the fight against cancer.
“This year’s relay will have a community atmosphere,” Mr Pottie said. Set right by the new playground, there will be something for everyone, including live entertainment, morning tea and Cancer Council mission tents.
“Relay is like a choose-your-own-adventure, whether you drop in to enjoy some mascot races, participate in the opening ceremony, listen to some music, grab some snacks from our food vendors, or set up a team gazebo to stay for the whole event.
“It is an occasion for everyone. You can get involved and make a difference regardless of your age or fitness level.”
Mr Pottie is looking forward to one of Wagga Wagga’s biggest fundraisers returning for another year after more than $75,000 was raised at the 2023 event.
Funds raised through Relay For Life support lifesaving cancer research, prevention programs, and support services in our local community.
From the Cancer Council’s 13 11 20 information hotline to the transport to treatment service and accommodation programs, all funds raised directly help those affected by cancer locally and across the state.
Almost 80,000 people across Australia joined last year’s movement, and millions more around the world did the same.
With an estimated 134,000 new cases of cancer expected to be diagnosed in Australia this year, every Australian is needed to rally behind Relay For Life to help continue this vital work.
